what is POS Scanner?

A barcode reader, which is also known as a price scanner or point-of-sale (POS) scanner, is a device used to capture and read information from a barcode. It can be handheld or stationary.

A barcode reader consists of three main components: a scanner, a decoder (which can be built-in or external), and a cable that is used to connect the reader to either a computer or POS system.

Types of POS Scanners

CCD Scanner/LED Scanner

A charged coupled device (CCD) or LED scanner is known for its high accuracy, although it can be expensive. The scanner has hundreds of tiny lights arranged in a long row, which helps reduce errors by performing multiple scans at once.

Image Scanner/Camera Reader

This scanner uses a small video camera to capture an image of the barcode. It is capable of reading a barcode from a distance of 3 to 9 inches.

Video Camera Readers

The video camera reader employs CCD technology similar to that used in a CCD bar code reader. It comprises numerous rows of sensors arranged in a two-dimensional array, enabling it to produce an image.

Omnidirectional Barcode Scanners

You might have come across horizontal scanners in supermarkets, where products are slid over a window for scanning. This type of scanner is widely used and popular.

Laser Scanner

This scanning device utilizes a combination of mirrors and lenses to accurately read barcodes from a distance of up to 24 inches. To minimize errors, the laser scanner can perform 500 scans per second. It can be installed as part of a scanning unit or used as a handheld device.

Large Field-of-View Readers

By utilizing high-resolution industrial cameras, this reader can capture multiple bar codes simultaneously and decode them instantly.
